Advisory Committees to Review Winter Recreation Programs

Olympia, WA - 07/06/09 - The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission invites winter sports enthusiasts to attend advisory committee meetings this summer for the state’s snowmobile and non-motorized Sno-Park programs.

The Winter Recreation Advisory Committee (non-motorized recreation) meeting is 7 p.m. July 17, 8 a.m. July 18 and, if necessary, 9 a.m. July 19, at the Washington State Parks Eastern Region Headquarters, 270 Ninth St., in East Wenatchee. The Snowmobile Advisory Committee meeting is 7 p.m. July 24, 8 a.m. July 25 and, if necessary, 9 a.m. July 26, at the Chelan Public Utility District, 327 N. Wenatchee Ave., in Wenatchee. The Snowmobile Advisory Committee and the Winter Recreation Advisory Committee (non-motorized recreation) will review last season’s revenues and expenditures and consider grant funding for next season’s programs. Committee members will decide which ongoing projects will be recommended to the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission for final approval. The meetings are open to the public.

The Washington State Legislature established the two committees to advise the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission on the development of winter recreation programs, such as trail grooming, snow removal, safety programs and equipment purchases. State Parks manages 3,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, 300 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails and more than 100 Sno-Parks. Sno-Parks are plowed parking areas near trails for snowmobiling and non-motorized winter activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snow play areas.

People needing special accommodations to attend the meetings may contact Pamela McConkey at (360) 902-8595 or the Washington Telecommunications Relay Service at (800) 833-6388.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission thanks the public for supporting state parks. Donations made to State Parks through the vehicle license tab renewal program starting with September 2009 renewals will keep state parks open in the two year budget cycle beginning July 1, 2009, provided adequate revenues are collected. The Commission manages a diverse system of more than 100 state parks and recreation programs, including long-distance trails, boating safety and winter recreation. The 96-year-old park system will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2013.
