Hillyard Festival Announces Results of the 2009 Chalk Art Walk

Spokane, WA - 06/08/09 - This year’s 12th annual ChalkArtWalk was unique. Not only would this be the last opportunity artists would have to draw on the historic sidewalks of the Hillyard Business District before they are replaced this summer along Market Street, but they were also asked to envision what the future of Hillyard might hold, to compliment Greater Hillyard’s neighborhood planning efforts. The theme, “Hillyard’s Future?” was interpreted by nearly 140 artists that came out this year, braving the dark skies constantly threatening rain that would likely annihilate their artwork. The Hillyard Neighborhood met them with free chalk and t-shirts, as well as free helmets for children from the Hillyard Kiwanis club. Professor Larry Davis of EWU, his students and a collection of stakeholders in the planning process led the neighborhood’s visitors in discussion about what they would like to see in Hillyard’s future.

Thankfully, the rain never came (except maybe a slight sprinkle), and the artists worked their magic on the sidewalks. Along with the usual doodles, this year many people were inspired to share what they wanted for their neighborhood or what they thought the future held. Many suggested clean and safe streets, restored and beautified buildings, diversity and harmony, and many of the other things the Hillyard Neighborhood has been waiting on for a long time, like the North-South Freeway. No less than 3 zoos were also suggested for the neighborhood, including great drawings of an elephant and octopus. Others still envisioned a futuristic Hillyard, including flying cars, floating cities and extra-terrestrials. One artist even asked rhetorically, “Where’s my hovercraft?”

This year’s Best of Show winner, 15-year-old Makayla Miracle from Hillyard, illustrated her vision for a “Hillyard Hoverpark” to someday replace our ever popular Hillyard Skatepark. This is the second time in 3 years that a young adult has won Best of Show over the older adults. ChalkArtWalk is for children of all ages, but it’s always special to have a young person win it.
