Spokane, WA - 10/08/2008 - The Spokane Shock announced four additions to their roster today. These additions include: DB Chaz Williams; DL Frank Morten, Jr.; OL Aryan Barto and DL Martel Brown.
Williams, 6-0 195, completed his collegiate career at University of Louisiana at Monroe where he accumulated 189 tackles and eight interceptions in just three seasons. Williams signed a free-agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before he was released shortly before the start of the season.
Morten and Barto both played their college football at Tulane University. DL Morten, 6-2 320, racked up 80 career tackles – including 14 tackles for a loss with four sacks – and four pass break-ups. OL Barto, 6-4 280, started his career as a left guard before taking over as the starting center for his senior season.
Brown, 6-2 265, completed his collegiate career at North Carolina State in 2007 and collected 77 tackles – including 10 sacks – over his four-year career.
“Our roster is starting to take shape,” Head Coach Adam Shackleford said. “We are further ahead of where we were last year but we still have a long way to go before camp starts up in March.”
The Shock’s roster now stands at 14 players of the 30 players who will be brought into training camp. Season ticket reservations for the defending National Conference Champion Shock can be made now by calling (509) 242 7462.
Spokane, WA - 10/07/2008 - The Spokane Shock announced today that DL Jacob Owens (pictured left) and WR Tremayne Kirkland (pictured right) have been added to their 2009 roster.
Kirkland, 6-0 170, finished his collegiate career at Portland State University in 2007 under the tutelage of Head Coach Jerry Glanville. In only two years as a Viking, Kirkland recorded 122 receptions – with 17 touchdowns – for 1,592 yards. After his senior season, he was named 1st team All Big-Sky. Prior to his experience at PSU, Kirkland attended UNLV where he accumulated 759 all-purpose yards as a receiver, punt returner, and rusher. As a freshman, Kirkland led the Mountain West Conference with 25 punt returns for 314 yards – including a 75-yard punt return.
“He caught a lot of balls in college and that was the first thing that caught our eye,” Head Coach Adam Shackleford said. “He’s a guy that makes plays; whether its hand-offs, receptions, or kick-returns. He is dangerous every time he touches the ball.”
Owens, 6-5 280, spent his collegiate career at Fairmount State University. As a Fighting Falcon, Owens racked up 145 tackles – including 16 sacks – 15 pass break-ups and seven fumble recoveries over his four-year career. These numbers generated some NFL interest after Owens completed his collegiate career in 2007. He signed as a free-agent with the New York Jets and was released shortly before the season.
“He has a good combination of work ethic, speed and power. He’s a pretty impressive specimen,” Shackleford explained. “He’s a little bit different than anyone we have ever had. It is very seldom to find a player with his size at 6-5 who can do the kind of things that he can do.”
With the addition of Kirkland and Owens, the Shock’s 2009 roster already stands at six players.

Spokane, WA - 10/02/2008 - The Spokane Shock announced today that former North Carolina State DB Jimmie Sutton and former FS Chris Hemphill from Central Washington University have joined the 2009 roster.
Sutton, 5-10 188, was a three-year starter for the Wolfpack where he collected over 100 tackles with 10 pass break-ups and one interception in 34 games.
“With this opportunity, I can show everybody what I’m made of,” Sutton explained. “I’m going to bring a lot of energy and excitement to this team. With the team (the Shock) being consecutive winners, that’s definitely something that I want to be a part of.”
Hemphill, 6-5 235, started his collegiate career at the University of Washington where he played in 24 games. As a Husky, Hemphill tallied 44 tackles, two pass break-ups and one interception. In his final year of college football, Hemphill transferred to Central Washington University. As a Wildcat, he appeared in 13 games and registered 75 tackles with five interceptions, two pass break-ups, one forced fumbled and one blocked kick. Hemphill is expected to compete for a roster spot as a Jack LB.
For Hemphill, the Shock’s winning ways also had some appeal.
“The team has always done well – winning championships, going to the playoffs – and joining the team just seemed to be the right thing to do,” Hemphill said.
According to Head Coach Adam Shackleford, the athletic ability of both of these players is “outstanding.”
“Both of these players are extremely athletic at their positions,” Shackleford explained. “Jimmie Sutton went to NC State as a receiver, and after one spring session he moved to corner. He became the starter and never left the field. Chris Hemphill is big and athletic and in the past we have had success at that position (Jack LB) with those types of players. He is a guy who will be able to move sideline to sideline very effectively.”
