What can a keyboard do?
In Addition
Using a keyboard, you can:

Input text and data. A keyboard is a basic tool for getting alphanumeric data into the computer. It gives you the means to take that first, essential step.

Perform calculations. Using the numeric keypad, you can perform simple calculations using the calculator applications provided with the Windows and Macintosh operating systems. The keypad will facilitate more complex calculations when used with specific application programs, such as spreadsheets and databases.

Run application programs more effectively. Thanks to function keys, specific commands for software applications are within easy reach. All you have to do is type the correct function key to perform a function that might otherwise require two keystrokes or a trip to the menu bar (or several dialogue boxes) with a mouse. These keys are sometimes used in conjunction with the CTRL, ALT and Shift keys to provide more options for application-specific tasks. Some programs also assign tasks to the numeric keypad, which can serve as another group of function buttons (or the numeric keypad, as advertised, depending on the position of the "number lock" button).
